A short tour of God’s own country- the backwaters and lush country side of Kerala. Kochi, where the tour begins, is a cluster of islands, and one of the finest natural harbours in the world. It used to be the major centre of trade amongst the British, Arabs, Chinese, Portuguese and Dutch. Even today it remains as the main trading centre for spices and seafood. Though it is Kerala’s most cosmopolitan city, the high-rise buildings and malls have not yet to overpower the unique attractions of its ancient mix of cultures, which is still very much apparent. Kumarakom slumbers on the banks of the famous Vembanad Lake, with its numerous canals, streams and distributaries that weave an intricate and enchantingly beautiful web. Its undisturbed tranquillity makes it a favourite amongst a vast number of migratory birds who are also attracted by the abundance of fish to be had. Vantage points all along the shore provide excellent bird – watching opportunities, making Kumarakom a popular destination for enthusiasts.
